5 Tips to Make Your Content More Punchy

You've got three seconds.

TL;DR: It’s all about rapid attention. Don’t say anything unnecessary until they’re already hooked.

Feature: 5 Tips to Make Your Content More Punchy

You have three seconds.

After that, most people are going to scroll right past you or click on something else. The audience you want to reach won't see you.

Here are five quick tactics to stand out and be noticed.

Number one: Go for the eyes.

As a writer, I hate to admit this.

But a compelling, eyeball-grabbing image right at the beginning is your best move. It doesn't even have to be related to your message, as long as it gets attention.

Number two: Open with action.

Crush it in the first sentence. If there is a place for a headline, write one that inspires curiosity and oozes self-interest.

If you're talking about crypto, lead with the time you vomited all over the couch as you watched your life's savings evaporate.

Put the most interesting thing you're going to write into your first sentence.

Number three: Kill your adverbs.

Adverbs get in the way. You (really, truly, technically) don't need adverbs.

I literally put this tip in the checklist that I shared with you last month.

Number four: Rewrite your verbs.

If your body of work morphed into a human body, your verbs would be the muscles.

Replace vague and flabby verbs with tight and specific. You want your verbs to evince strength and definition.

Number five: Read it out loud.

Read your masterpiece out loud before you click Publish, Send, or Post. You'll find new ways to make it short and snappy.

If a phrase feels uncomfortable to say, it's not going to feel good to read.

Bonus tip: Ask a provocative question.

Why do you think people respond to questions?

Tool of the Week: Make Your Content Punchy

  • Go for the eyes

  • Open with action

  • Kill your adverbs

  • Rewrite your verbs

  • Read it out loud

  • Ask a provocative question

I built a business by looking at websites and profiles, calling the owners, and pointing out their best content…buried under a sea of unimportant verbiage.

Don’t make me call you next. Play with these tactics and watch your engagements and conversions grow like springtime grass in Crescent City.

I expect great work from you.

How to master Kickstarter (coming soon)

I’m putting together a Kickstarter campaign to launch a new book. In the coming weeks I’ll probably do an article on what works and how to bring in the big bucks on this platform.

In the meantime, here’s the big (hopefully obvious) principle to live by: All the strategies and principles that work for copywriting and marketing apply to Kickstarter.

That wraps it up for now. If you have any questions or comments about this issue, hit the Reply button and tell me what’s on your mind. I may not answer you directly, but I read every one.

Always keep growing,
